US wants to dialogue with Greenland without aiming to conquering island
Jeff Landry, who also serves as Louisiana’s governor, spoke to Fox News on Tuesday, emphasizing the importance of understanding the priorities and concerns of Greenlanders.
“What are they looking for? What opportunities have they not gotten? Why haven't they gotten the protection that they actually deserve?” he asked.
Public opinion in Greenland consistently opposes any notion of US annexation. President Donald Trump announced Landry’s appointment on Sunday, despite his lack of formal diplomatic experience.
In reaction, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen issued a joint statement affirming that Greenland belongs to its people.
Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has drawn US interest because of its strategic location and abundant mineral resources. Trump has repeatedly asserted that any US engagement is driven by “national security reasons, not for minerals.”
Following Landry’s appointment, the European Union expressed support for Denmark and Greenland, highlighting concerns over US ambitions in the Arctic. Trump’s repeated suggestions to incorporate Greenland and Canada as US territories have drawn widespread criticism, with analysts warning that such proposals risk straining relations with key NATO allies.
