US-Iran Talks Advance as Ceasefire Nears Expiration
With a two-week ceasefire set to expire on April 22, officials cautioned that no final deal has been secured. Key differences persist between Washington and Tehran, and any comprehensive agreement would require broader alignment within Iran’s leadership.
"We want to make a deal. And parts of their government want to make a deal. Now the trick is to get the whole of government over there to make the deal," a U.S. official was quoted as saying.
According to the report, reaching a framework deal could necessitate extending the ceasefire to allow time for negotiating a full agreement. However, officials warned that finalizing such details would be complex and time-consuming. The details "are complicated -- you can't do that in two days," another U.S. official said.
Despite signs of progress, both Iran and the United States on Wednesday rejected reports claiming an "in principle agreement" had already been reached to prolong the ceasefire.
U.S. officials said mounting economic strain on Tehran—driven in part by Washington’s naval blockade restricting Iran’s oil exports—has increased pressure to secure a deal.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump told media in an interview aired Wednesday that the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran is "very close to being over." He has repeatedly suggested the war is nearing an end, though without providing a specific timeline.
